Bathroom Basins 101: A Look at Мounts, Materials and Modern Designs

Ever stopped to think about your trusty bathroom basin? 🤔 Probably not, right? Well, today, I will be going to give that humble sink the spotlight it deserves.

I will be talking about how it’s fixed to the wall (or not), the stuff it’s made of, and the cool designs you can choose from.😎😎

Just think about it: Your basin is where the magic happens. It’s where you splash water on your face to wake up in the morning, and it’s the MVP in your nightly teeth-brushing routine.

In other words, it’s a crucial part of your daily routine. So, let’s chat about the three M’s to consider when choosing the perfect sink for your needs and bathroom design.🎯

Mounting Options Dissected

When it comes to mounting, there are several options to choose from. There are bathroom hand basins on the market that you can install on the wall, a pedestal, or a countertop. You can choose according to your needs.

Wall-Mounted

As the most conventional mounting option, wall-mounted basins are ideal for commercial applications. These are also the most space-efficient and affordable alternatives, as there’s no need to install a vanity, which makes them a preferred solution for many homeowners.🙂

Many prefer these sinks as they make the area underneath open, which in turn makes the bathroom feel lighter.

While rectangular basins are the most common, you can also find them in round and corner designs for wall mounting.

However, installation is crucial here. Check the integrity of your wall; you’ll need something solid to support the weight. Also, consider the plumbing; a wall-mounted basin might require adjustments that could impact your existing setup. TBH, this is my favourite type of sink. 😍

Pedestal

Pedestal sinks are another popular choice in the market. But because the pedestal takes up so much room, where you can otherwise fit a vanity or a laundry basket, it’s not the most space-efficient option.

But if you’re aiming for a retro or Victorian-style bathroom, this sink can be the perfect addition to your space, serving as a stunning focal point.

Countertop

If you’re into a more traditional setup or just want to show off a bit, countertop basins might be your 😁 jam. These sit on top of your vanity or countertop, giving your bathroom a touch of classic elegance.

You can go for a bold, standalone vessel basin that steals the show, or choose a more simple top-mount or under-mount look.

Just remember, you’ll want to ensure your vanity can handle the weight.😅

Top-Mount

Installing a top-mount basin is simple and won’t break the bank. Unfortunately, there isn’t a clear break between the sink and the countertop, so grime tends to collect there and is a pain to clean.😎

Undermount

In contrast, under-mount basins are installed flush beneath the surface of the countertop. As a result, they have a sleek, clean lip.

Modern and Scandinavian bathrooms often use these sinks because of the cleaner look they provide. Since there is no space for grime to collect between the under-mount sink’s lip and the surface, installing and cleaning them is a breeze.😀

Vessel

A lot of people go for vessel basins, which are essentially big bowls that sit on top of a countertop or vanity.

The top-mount and under-mount varieties of sinks blend seamlessly with their countertops or vanities, but these basins stand tall and proud.

Because of this, they need to be cleaned more frequently and are more easily 😅 damaged. Additionally, you should consider the height of the countertop or vanity before installing the basin to ensure it is not too high for usage because of its height.

Materials Matter

Porcelain

Bathroom sinks crafted from white porcelain and these are the most popular. Porcelain is a wonderful material for both contemporary and classic bathroom designs because it requires very less maintenance and care compared to other materials.

Porcelain sinks are available in a range of colours, not just white, including sky blue, baby pink and many more to go.

A pastel porcelain sink might be the perfect finishing touch for a bathroom with a vintage vibe.

Having said that, be careful when using and cleaning porcelain sinks because they may chip easily when something is dropped on them and become stained with time. So you have to make sure that you don’t drop anything on it. 😁

Stone

Sinks made of stone are another great choice for bathrooms, especially those that exude a rustic, industrial, or vintage style.

Just keep in mind that the cost of stone sinks is higher. In addition, these basins require extra attention and certain cleaning chemicals because of the porous nature of the stone, which makes them more difficult to maintain. And it could also be posted with high maintenance needs. You can definitely go for it if the money is not an issue! 🤩

Glass

For contemporary bathrooms that want to make a statement, glass vessel sinks are a great option.🙂

A glass bowl is simple to clean since it does not have any pores. But on the other hand, it’s also fragile and should only be used in a bathroom where there is little chance of someone dropping something heavy on it.

Modern Designs to Give Your Bathroom a Stylish Edge

Now that I have covered the basics, let’s talk about the fun stuff – the modern designs that can turn your basin from a utility to a statement piece.😁

Sleek and Minimalist

Picture this: clean lines, simple shapes, and a basin that says, “I’m here to get the job done – with 😎 style.”

Sleek and minimalist sinks are all about embracing simplicity and modern bathrooms where less is more.

Innovative Shapes and Forms

If you’re tired of the same old round or oval basins, it’s time to explore innovative shapes and forms.

Picture square basins, asymmetrical designs, or even basin shapes that mimic natural elements. Trust me… It’s a small change that can make a big impact on your bathroom’s overall vibe.

Smart Technology Integration

Yes, 😎 you read that right—smart technology is making its way into bathroom hand basins. Imagine a sink with built-in LED lighting, touchless faucets, or even temperature 🤩😍 control.

It’s not just about functionality anymore; it’s about adding a touch of tech-savvy luxury to your daily routine.

Some Final Advice When Shopping for a Bathroom Sink

Now that you’re armed with knowledge about mounts, materials, and modern designs, it’s time to choose the right option for your space.

  • Assessing Bathroom Size and Layout – Consider the size of your bathroom. If it’s on the smaller side, a wall-mounted option might be your best friend, creating the illusion of more space. For larger bathrooms, you have the luxury to play around with countertop basins and more extravagant designs.
  • Considering the Overall Design Theme – If you’re going for a minimalist look, a sleek, wall-mounted basin made of porcelain might be the perfect fit. For a more eclectic or natural vibe, stone basins or glass vessels can tie the whole theme together.

Your sink should reflect your style and cater to your lifestyle. If you’re all about convenience, a high-tech basin might be just what you need. If you love a touch of luxury, explore glass options.
